Historical Criticism - Historical criticism is an approach to literature that uses history as a means of understanding a literary work more clearly. Such criticism moves beyond both the facts of an author's personal life and the text itself in order to examine the social and intellectual currents in which the author composed the work.

The Historical-Critical Method - The Historical Critical Method is a broad term that includes numerous methodologies and strategies for understanding the ancient Manuscripts. Historical Criticism is divided into two main branches: Lower and Higher Criticism.

Source criticism - Source Criticism is an aspect of historical criticism, a method of literary study used especially in the field of biblical criticism that seeks to understand a literary piece better by attempting to establish the sources used by the author and/or redactor who put the literary piece together. Sometimes biblical scholars use the term literary criticism as a synonym for source criticism.

Higher criticism - Higher criticism is a branch of literary analysis known as historical criticism that attempts to investigate the origins of a text, especially the text of the Bible. Higher criticism in particular focuses on the sources of a document and tries to determine the authorship, date, and place of composition of the text.
